1st / 2nd Grade

1st and 2nd Grade at Our Saviour Lutheran School is an exciting place to be.
In a fun, safe, loving and nurturing environment our students are grounded in the foundational subjects of Reading, Phonetics, Mathematics, and the Christian Faith.

Your younglings burst with a sense of accomplishment as they start to really ‘get it’ in these areas. Our students also flourish in the subjects of Science, Social Studies, Language, Physical Education, and Art.

When our 1st Graders begin in September, they apprehensively approach the classroom, beginning a journey filled with change. By the time they leave at the end of the 2nd Grade they are no longer cautious, but confident about themselves as learners, and about a God who loves them.

Having acquired a strong and firm foundation in the core areas mentioned, they are ready for the opportunities awaiting them in the next grades.

3rd / 4th Grade

The 3rd and 4th Grades are crucial development years, and we understand that. 3rd Graders make the transition from the very guided learning of earlier years, where a teacher give them everything toward working more independently.

They also start to acquire knowledge at a more advanced level and to work co-operatively with others — this is important for them to remain interested.

4th Graders gain confidence in the things begun in the 3rd Grade, working both independently and co-operatively in all subject areas. Students gain the skill and knowledge base needed to thrive at the middle school level.

5th / 6th Grade

The 5th and 6th Grades are exciting! Challenging science research projects and opportunities for creative writing get the juices flowing. Confidence and self-esteem grow.

So does God-confidence, as students start asking serious questions about life and faith for themselves and receive thought-provoking answers.

Health is added as a subject for these maturing young people (which continues into the 7th and 8th Grades), and this is also the level at which they are eligible to run for office in the student government.

7th / 8th Grade

There’s no question that the students and parents of the 7th and 8th Grade class have got one eye on high school... which is just ahead!

NYC has a lot of great high schools, and at OSLS we want our students to be thoroughly prepared for the school that is right for them.

At OSL they will tackle advanced level novels (eg. “Lord of the Flies” and “To Kill a Mockingbird”) and be put through a science curriculum reinforced with lab skills (eg. microscope and triple-beam balance skills). They compete in a science expo, gaining greater understanding of the world God has created.

They also learn to care for His world, participating, for example, in an environmentally based beach clean-up. Anyone who is found lagging in math in 7 and 8 is given special attention to get them ready for the High School application process.

God has a plan for each of our graduates, and we want them to be thoroughly prepared to live it out.
